7 AI automation trends that will shape 2027

In two years AI automation has moved from pilots to operations. According to McKinsey’s global survey The State of AI (March 2025), 78% of organisations already use AI in at least one business function. Gartner expects 33% of enterprise software applications to include agentic AI by 2028, up from less than 1% in 2024, enabling 15% of day-to-day work decisions to be made autonomously. These are the seven trends that, judging by what we already see in projects, will shape 2027, and what is worth doing in the coming months.

1. Agents stop answering and start executing

The chatbot that answers questions has fallen short. The 2027 trend is the digital worker: an AI system that receives a request, looks up the company’s context, decides and executes the action in the CRM, the ERP or the booking system, escalating to a person when needed. The difference is not the language model but the fact that the agent has permissions, tools and traceability to finish the process. At Twinny we call them Digital Workers, and it is the leap that changes ROI the most: you pay for processes resolved, not conversations handled.

2. WhatsApp is billed per message: the customer journey goes multichannel

Since 1 October 2026 Meta charges every service message on the WhatsApp Business Platform, including the ones that used to be free inside the 24-hour window. A twenty-message support conversation costs twenty times more than a one-message one. The effect in 2027 will be twofold: WhatsApp consolidates as the entry point and notification channel, and the rich part of the experience (forms, bookings, payments, documents) moves to owned web experiences and to voice.

Companies that today compare tools such as Wati or ManyChat to automate WhatsApp will start demanding two things: the official Meta API, so they do not risk their number with automations built on WhatsApp Web, and an agent that executes in their systems instead of following flows. We have gathered the differences in our comparisons with Wati and with ManyChat, and in the WhatsApp Web guide for businesses.

3. AI voice becomes the fastest-growing channel

Calls were the channel nobody wanted to automate because the experience was poor. That has changed: voice agents understand natural language, look up the customer’s record and execute while they talk. With WhatsApp calls and traditional telephony on the same business number, in 2027 the question will no longer be whether to automate voice, but which interactions a call resolves better than twenty messages.

4. MCP and A2A: agents connect through open standards

Every agent with its own integration to SAP or Salesforce does not scale. In 2027 companies will expose their systems as reusable capabilities through private MCP (Model Context Protocol) servers, and agents will collaborate with each other through protocols such as A2A. The practical consequence is that the integration is built once and used by any authorised agent: Twinny’s, corporate copilots or a partner’s, always through a gateway with identity, permissions and audit.

5. AI-ready data: the Company Memory replaces RAG over documents

Searching PDFs is not enough to execute a process. The trend is to build an AI-ready data and context layer that unifies CRM, ERP, documentation, email and conversations in a common model with permissions and traceability. It is what we call the Company Memory at Twinny: the agent does not retrieve fragments, it queries structured data, business rules and the customer’s history. Without that layer, the agent answers well and executes badly.

6. EU AI Act: from a date on the calendar to per-decision traceability

Since 2 August 2026 most obligations of the EU AI Act apply, including those for Annex III high-risk systems (recruitment, access to essential services, education). In 2027 the legal department’s question will not be "do you use AI?" but "can you prove what the system decided, with which data and under which policy?". The technical answer is per-decision traceability: every agent action signed with a timestamp, the policy applied, the data consulted and the option of human review.

7. Local and hybrid AI: cost and sovereignty decide where the model runs

With thousands of conversations and documents a day, the per-token cost of external providers stops being marginal. And in regulated sectors data cannot leave the perimeter. The 2027 trend is to decide per process: open models deployed in the customer’s infrastructure for high-volume and sensitive work, cloud for peaks and for the cases that need the most capable model, and the same AI layer on top. It is not a choice for the whole company, it is a choice per process.

What to do now: five moves to reach 2027 with an advantage

  • Pick one high-volume process and calculate its current cost, the capacity you need and the ROI of automating it. Start with one process, not a transformation plan.
  • Review your WhatsApp operation: how many service messages you send, which interactions can start there and continue on web or voice, and whether your provider uses the official Meta API.
  • Inventory the systems without an API (in-house software, legacy applications) that block automation today and decide which get exposed through RPA, MCP or both.
  • Demand per-decision traceability from any agent that will act on customers, patients, students or employees. It is your evidence under the EU AI Act.
  • Define a data policy: what may go to an external provider, what must stay local and who authorises each agent.
In 2027 the winner will not be whoever has the most agents, but whoever has the AI layer they all work on.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main AI automation trend for 2027?

The move from agents that answer to agents that execute complete processes in the company’s systems (Digital Workers), with permissions, context and per-decision traceability. Gartner estimates that 33% of enterprise applications will include agentic AI by 2028.

What changes on WhatsApp for businesses in 2027?

Since 1 October 2026 Meta charges service messages per unit; they used to be free inside the 24-hour window. WhatsApp becomes the entry point and notification channel, and the rich part of the experience moves to voice and owned web experiences.

Is it safe to automate WhatsApp with tools built on WhatsApp Web?

No. Unofficial automations on WhatsApp Web breach Meta’s terms and can get the number banned. The safe route is the WhatsApp Business Platform (official API), which platforms such as Twinny are built on.

What does the EU AI Act require from August 2026?

Most of the regulation’s obligations, including those for Annex III high-risk systems: risk management, data quality, technical documentation, event logging, human oversight and transparency. In practice, per-decision traceability.
